CENTRE FOR COMMUNITY ARTS

Centre for community arts

In July 2007 and at the conclusion of a successful capital project, Artlink moved into the Centre for Community Arts at 87 Princes Avenue in Hull. Since 1982, Artlink has been dedicated to developing and delivering a range of high-quality community arts activities and events. Our activities and services are targeted to the people of Hull and the Humber, many of whom are socially disadvantaged, economically isolated and excluded. Artlink’s four areas of provision are outreach projects, exhibitions of work by national and regional artists and community art, training opportunities and an information service.

Our new premises now feature a beautiful gallery space, versatile studio for workshop activity, fully-equipped training room, shop for artists’ work and a rental office. These spaces will enable us to build on our reputation for excellent service and enhance Artlink’s capacity to meet the growing needs of our region. They will also be made available for community hire, maintaining Artlink’s reputation as a centre for arts development, participation and collaboration.

Artlink is open from Monday to Friday 9:00 – 17:00 and Saturday 10:00 – 16:00.

Artlink’s four areas of provision are:

Book Club

Arts Development Worker Sarah Fisher is starting up an Artlink Book Club to run on the second Tuesday of every month 1 – 2 pm in our Gallery. The first three are scheduled for 11 March, 8 April and 13 May 2008. The first book for discussion will be Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman, described as “...delightful, funny and affecting.” The story mixes modern-day Britain and America with myth and magic. Thereafter each member of our club will be invited to choose a book on a rotational basis. Please bring along your favourite book for the first session to help inform future book choices.

Artlink launched its new Centre for Community Arts on Friday 7 December. The day will filled with fun and engaging workshops, tours of the building and a cake-cutting ceremony with the Board Chair, Terry Bowker. On the evening, Artlink’s staff and Board were joined by over 250 supporters to continue the celebration. Special thanks go to Mr. Kim Ryley, Chief Executive of Hull City Council, who officially opened Artlink’s new home at 87 Princes Avenue, Hull. Artlink also wishes to thank the Board and all the artists, volunteers and participants who made the launch a very special day. Here’s to 25 more years of inspiring and meaningful community arts work.
