CARTWHEELS

Cartwheels is an Open College Network accredited practical training programme. It has been designed for artists who would like to use their art skills on community projects as art workers or volunteers.

You do not need experience of being an artworker to join the course but you should have an interest in art and have some artistic ability in any medium (at any level) and a desire to do community art work.

The course progresses through three stages; you will be offered tutorial support at each stage through to achievement and certification of either level 2 or 3.

Level 2

Learners could include those who are new to community arts facilitation or have been absent from the learning environment for some time. This is also suitable for individuals who are unable to spend the time planning, preparing and running a project because of other commitments.

Level 3

This level is more suitable for those who are already practising arts facilitators or more confident students, and a progression route for level 2 achievers.

For this option you will receive a project budget of between £50 -£75 to spend on materials for a project.

Stage 1

Each run involves six three-hour training sessions, and you will be introduced to all of the elements needed to plan and facilitate a community arts project, including:

  • Community art and the role of the community artworker
  • Facilitation skills, communication and barriers, learning styles and room layouts
  • Project and session planning and contingencies
  • Resources and budgets
  • Publicity, Health and Safety
  • Evaluation

Stage 2

Level 2 requires the learner to volunteer on a community arts project and assist an artworker.

Level 3 requires the learner to plan and run their own community arts project with a group and organisation of their own choice.

Stage 3

Both level 2 and 3 learners will be required to produce a portfolio of evidence to support their project experience.

Assessment

The course tutor will carry out formative assessment as the course progresses, and observation of the Stage 2 project experience. Summative assessment of the final portfolio will take place in preparation for an internal and external moderation process which will determine achievement and certification.

Venue

Courses will be delivered at the Artlink Centre for Community Arts, 87 Princes Avenue, Hull, HU5 3QP, or where demand is recognised within the former Humberside area. Past courses have been run in Hull, Bridlington, Grimsby, York and Barton.

Cost

The course is *FREE although funding criteria changes do mean that you will have to meet the current funding criteria.

  • Childcare and travel costs may also be claimed subject to the funding criteria.
  • Check with the Training Co-ordinator to receive updates to eligibility.
